The Inspector General of Prisons Punjab, Mian Salik Jalal, has made regular health tests and psychological screening mandatory for all prison employees across the province, citing growing concerns over physical and mental illnesses caused by long working hours and continuous duty.

According to a circular issued by the IG Prisons, health tests for employees will begin this week across all jails in Punjab, including Lahore. Every prison will also set up a health screening camp once every three months.

In addition, all employees must undergo an annual medical examination covering blood pressure, sugar levels, cholesterol, weight, and other basic health indicators.

The circular directs that employees suffering from depression or mental stress be provided free psychological counselling. Prisons have also been instructed to introduce exercise programmes, sports activities, and meditation sessions to help reduce mental stress among staff.

The IG Prisons has ordered that any employee showing symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, chest pain, or other alarming signs be immediately transferred to a hospital.

Furthermore, each prison will compile a confidential health file for every officer and employee following their physical and psychological evaluation.

The circular also urges prison employees to avoid smoking, adopt a balanced diet, and make daily exercise a routine.

Officials say the continuous 24-hour duty cycles and intense work pressure have led to a noticeable rise in the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease among prison staff. All deputy inspectors general and superintendents have been directed to ensure compliance with the health and psychological screening orders.
