The Punjab government has planned a Rs. 31 billion project to reduce Lahore’s reliance on groundwater by treating water from the BRB Canal for drinking purposes. According to Associated Press Of Pakistan (APP), under the project, a Surface Water Treatment Plant near Bhaini Road will initially treat 54 million gallons of water per day (MGD). Authorities plan to eventually increase its capacity to 540 MGD.

The Punjab government has planned a Rs. 31 billion project to reduce Lahore’s reliance on groundwater by treating water from the BRB Canal for drinking purposes.

According to Associated Press Of Pakistan (APP), under the project, a Surface Water Treatment Plant near Bhaini Road will initially treat 54 million gallons of water per day (MGD). Authorities plan to eventually increase its capacity to 540 MGD.

The Central Development Working Party has approved the project’s PC-I, which will now go to the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) for final approval. Work will begin after the final approval.

WASA Lahore currently operates 594 deep tube wells, which supply around 329 million gallons of groundwater daily to the city.

The project will receive financial assistance from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) as part of its $235 million financing package for Lahore’s water and wastewater management. The initiative aims to conserve Lahore’s declining groundwater reserves by gradually replacing part of the city’s groundwater supply with treated canal water.
