Punjab Information and Culture Minister Azma Bokhari has announced plans to revive family-friendly theater performances in the province.
In a video shared by Lahore’s Alhamra Arts Council, Bokhari said the provincial government is updating the laws governing stage performances and will host theater plays at Alhamra next month as part of Independence Day celebrations.
She said the government has already identified problems in the current theater landscape and wants to restore performances that reflect Punjabi and Pakistani culture.
Bokhari said the revival will feature senior actors as well as young performers. She invited the public to support the effort for quality family theatre.
The minister said the existing theater law is outdated and dates back to the Dramatic Performances Act, 1876.
She said the Punjab government has already amended the law and is working on further changes, including artist registration and strict theater SOPs.
Alhamra later announced the first production under the initiative, Friends of ’70s. Written by Saeed Anjum and directed by Waseem Abbas, the play will run from August 8 to 14 at 8 pm each night.
