The Punjab government has launched a province-wide operation against illegal industrial units operating in residential areas on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.

As part of the campaign, the Environmental Protection Department’s Chiniot team carried out a major operation against a leather processing unit accused of causing environmental pollution.

Officials demolished an illegal tannery and a warehouse used for storing animal hides in a residential locality.

Authorities said the facility was engaged in hide processing and leather manufacturing activities that generated foul smells and unhealthy environmental conditions, causing serious discomfort for nearby residents.

The action followed complaints from residents, who welcomed the operation and appreciated government intervention. Residents said children, women, and elderly people had been facing health and hygiene issues due to prolonged pollution in the area.

Officials said the crackdown is part of a broader enforcement drive against environmental violations across Punjab.

Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb reiterated that industrial activities are not permitted in residential neighbourhoods and warned of strict action against illegal tanneries, slaughterhouses, plastic-burning units, waste-burning operations, and crop residue burning.

She said no leniency would be shown to environmental offenders and urged citizens to comply with regulations, adding that the crackdown on polluters would continue across the province.

Marriyum Aurangzeb also noted that Punjab’s air quality has improved over the past two years due to government environmental policies and enforcement measures.
