The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has warned of above-normal temperatures and increased rainfall across parts of Punjab during May, June, and July, raising concerns over heatwaves, flash floods, urban flooding, and windstorms.
According to the PDMA’s seasonal weather outlook, northern and north-western Punjab are expected to receive above-normal rainfall over the next three months, while eastern Punjab may see slightly below-normal rainfall. Central Punjab is likely to experience near-normal rainfall.
The authority issued advisories to divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, police, WASA, and Rescue 1122, urging them to complete advance preparedness measures to tackle possible emergencies.
PDMA warned that most districts of Punjab could face heatwave conditions and above-normal temperatures from May 7 to 11. Rising temperatures may also trigger strong winds, dust storms, and hailstorms, posing risks to seasonal crops, vegetables, and orchards.
Farmers were advised to monitor weather updates before irrigation and harvesting activities.
The authority cautioned that despite forecasts of increased rainfall, above-normal temperatures during May could intensify heat spikes, especially in the plain areas of Punjab.
It further warned that heavy rainfall could lead to flash floods and landslides in mountainous and flood-prone regions, while major cities may experience urban flooding in low-lying and poorly drained areas.
The advisory also highlighted the growing risk of vector-borne diseases, including dengue, due to rising temperatures in southern districts.
Following directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the PDMA instructed all relevant departments to remain on alert and strengthen emergency preparedness.
PDMA Director General Umar Javed urged citizens to take precautionary measures during severe weather, advising people to avoid unnecessary travel during heatwaves, drink more water, and protect children and elderly individuals from direct sunlight.
