The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has introduced new regulations for students seeking admission to foreign medical colleges, tightening eligibility and registration requirements for overseas medical education.

Under the new rules, students who have passed FSc in Pakistan must have secured at least 60 percent marks. They must also obtain at least 50 percent marks in the MDCAT exam.

For students applying abroad through exams such as MCAT or UCAT, a minimum of 50 percent marks will be required. The foreign medical institution must also be included in the approved list of recognized medical graduates.

The new regulations state that the degree program must be a five-year course in allopathic medicine. In addition, foreign medical graduation must include at least 6,200 hours of study and 80 percent attendance.

PMDC has also made it mandatory for students to obtain an online registration certificate from the council before taking admission to a foreign medical college.

During their education abroad, students will be required to provide records of their study visa as well as travel history.

The council has further made the National Registration Examination compulsory for foreign medical graduates seeking recognition in Pakistan.

Another key condition is that students must complete a language course of the country where they plan to study before taking admission.

According to the new rules, graduates who fail to meet these conditions will not be eligible to sit the National Registration Examination. Those who do not pass the exam will also not be granted a PMDC license.
