A probable Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) event triggered emergency response measures in the Hisper–Hoper region of Gilgit-Baltistan after the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) detected a sudden surge in river discharge from the Hisper catchment.
According to PMD officials, the department’s GLOF Early Warning System recorded an exponential rise in water levels, prompting immediate alerts to the Gilgit-Baltistan Disaster Management Authority, district administrations, and other relevant agencies.
Following the warning, local authorities launched precautionary measures and issued alerts to residents living near riverbanks and in low-lying areas.
Travelers using the Karakoram Highway were also advised to exercise caution due to the risk of flooding and possible infrastructure damage.
District administrations, local magistrates, community leaders, and volunteers mobilised quickly to warn residents in vulnerable settlements, including Hoper, Hisper, Ganish, Murtazaabad, Nasirabad, Mayun, Hussainabad, Rahimabad, Nomal, Jutal, Jaglot Colony, and Chilmish.
Authorities used mosque and Imambargah announcements to disseminate warnings, while monitoring teams were deployed at key bridges and river crossings.
Officials reported that approximately 200 to 250 feet of the Hisper Road was washed away by floodwaters, disrupting access to the valley and affecting transportation routes.
Authorities estimate that repairs could take more than a week, creating logistical challenges for local communities and emergency services.
Despite the sharp rise in water levels, no casualties or major emergencies had been reported by late evening. However, officials continued to closely monitor floodwaters as they moved downstream towards the Hunza and Gilgit river systems.
Authorities credited the PMD’s early warning system for enabling disaster management agencies to take preventive measures and conduct community outreach before floodwaters reached downstream settlements.
The PMD has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, avoid riverbanks, and follow instructions issued by local authorities as monitoring and response efforts continue.
