Shadab Khan is likely to be appointed as the captain of Pakistan’s T20I team as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) considers a change in leadership following the team’s recent performances in the shortest format.
The expected decision would place Shadab in a key leadership role as Pakistan looks to reshape its T20I setup after the recent campaign under Salman Ali Agha.
Salman was appointed Pakistan’s T20I captain in March 2025, with Shadab named as his deputy. He also led the side during the 2026 T20 World Cup, but Pakistan’s campaign has reportedly forced the PCB to reconsider its leadership plans.
Pakistan endured a disappointing tournament, winning three of their four first-round matches to qualify for the Super Eight stage. Their victories came against the Netherlands, the United States and Namibia, while their only group-stage defeat came against India.
In the Super Eight stage, Pakistan’s match against New Zealand was washed out, before they lost to England and defeated Sri Lanka by five runs.
Despite finishing the tournament with four wins, two defeats and one no-result, Pakistan narrowly missed out on a semi-final place and were eliminated before the knockout stage.
Shadab has emerged as one of the leading options due to his experience, all-round ability and previous exposure to captaincy at the international level.
The leg-spinner has already led Pakistan in six T20Is between 2020 and 2023, winning two matches and losing four.
While his captaincy record is not dominant, Shadab remains one of Pakistan’s most experienced T20 players. He is Pakistan’s leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals, with 124 wickets from 2017 to 2026, and continues to offer value as a lower-order batter.
He also made useful contributions with the bat during the 2026 T20 World Cup, scoring 30 off 12 balls against the United States, 36 not out off 22 balls against Namibia, and 23 off 11 balls against England.
The PCB has not made an official announcement regarding the captaincy change so far. However, if the board decides to move on from Salman Ali Agha, Shadab Khan appears to be one of the strongest candidates to lead Pakistan in T20Is.
