Pakistan has reportedly refused to accept the return of Shabir Ahmed, a convicted member of the Rochdale grooming gang in the United Kingdom.
The issue of Ahmed’s possible return to Pakistan was raised by the British foreign secretary during discussions with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar.
Speaking to journalists in London, Dar said Pakistan and the United Kingdom do not have an agreement covering the exchange or extradition of individuals convicted of sexual offences.
Ahmed was convicted of 30 offences involving the sexual abuse of children. Dar said the British government had raised the matter with him during his visit, but Pakistan could not take Ahmed back under the existing legal framework between the two countries.
The deputy prime minister described his visit to the UK as highly successful and said his meetings with British officials covered several important issues.
He added that he also held positive meetings with the Commonwealth secretary-general and the UK’s national security adviser.
According to Dar, British officials appreciated Pakistan’s diplomatic role in efforts aimed at promoting peace.
He said Pakistan’s role, along with that of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the Field Marshal, in mediation efforts between the United States and Iran was also acknowledged during the meetings.
