A senior official confirmed that authorities are currently not issuing work permits for expatriate workers above 60.
The change may affect long-serving foreign employees who expected authorities to continue renewing their permits after they reached 60.
In 2022, Oman removed the previous age limit that prevented expatriates from renewing work permits after reaching 60.
The decision was made after companies requested flexibility to retain experienced and skilled employees.
Oman’s Ministry of Labour had earlier said the policy would help companies retain experienced and productive workers.
The decision mainly supported businesses that had met Omanisation requirements and roles open to foreign employees.
The latest move reverses that policy, with employers now facing challenges renewing permits for expatriate workers above 60.
Oman’s Ministry of Labour continues to provide online work permit renewal services for non-Omani workers. However, the publicly available service details do not currently mention a specific age limit.
