The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) has arrested a 12-member cybercrime gang allegedly involved in hacking the data and contact numbers of several foreign embassies, including those of Saudi Arabia, Germany and Italy.
Speaking at a press conference in Lahore on Tuesday, NCCIA Punjab Director Ali Waseem said the suspects had been operating since 2019 and targeted both Pakistani and foreign nationals through sophisticated online scams.
According to the official, the embassies informed the NCCIA that the group had hacked their contact numbers and redirected them to numbers controlled by the suspects. During the operation, investigators recovered fake appointment letters, mobile phones and other digital evidence.
Ali Waseem said the gang had developed fake embassy websites and recreated the online environment of diplomatic missions to deceive victims. He added that the suspects had also recruited experts in multiple languages to facilitate their activities. A Singapore Police uniform was also recovered during the raids.
The NCCIA said law enforcement agencies are continuing raids to arrest other members and facilitators linked to the network.
