Residents across several parts of Karachi reported a strong gas-like smell in the air, with many complaining of breathing difficulties and an uneasy feeling.
The unusual odor was reported from Mehmoodabad, Manzoor Colony, Karsaz, and areas surrounding Stadium Road, prompting concerns among residents about a possible gas leak.
However, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) clarified that there was no gas leakage in the system and attributed the smell to ongoing pipeline testing.
According to an SSGC spokesperson, work on a new gas pipeline is currently underway at Abul Hassan Isphahani Road, where testing is being carried out before the line is commissioned.
As part of the testing process, the utility said it had temporarily increased the amount of odorant added to natural gas, making the smell much stronger than usual in nearby areas.
The spokesperson added that while the company had received several complaints from residents, all system pressures remained normal and no gas leak had been detected.
SSGC urged consumers not to panic and said normal activities could continue without concern, assuring the public that the stronger odor was a temporary result of the pipeline testing process.
