Former Pakistan left-arm fast bowler Mohammad Amir has reportedly become a British citizen after obtaining a UK passport, making him eligible to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The development came to attention after Amir reshared an Instagram post that referred to his change in nationality status. The fast bowler had previously hinted that he could consider playing in the IPL once he became eligible.
Amir, 34, acquired UK citizenship through his marriage to British national Narjis Khan.
Last year, Amir publicly spoke about the possibility of featuring in the IPL as a British citizen. During an appearance on Geo News program Haarna Mana Hai, he said he could become eligible for the tournament in the near future.
“By next year, I will have the opportunity to play in the IPL, and if given the chance, then why not? I will play in the IPL,” Amir said.
Amir also said he would prefer to join Royal Challengers Bengaluru if selected. Former Pakistan batter Ahmed Shehzad, who was part of the same discussion, said RCB could benefit from Amir’s experience, especially in their bowling attack.
“RCB need a bowler like Amir to fix their bowling woes. They have a strong batting unit, but their bowling has always been a concern. If Amir plays for RCB, they will win the title,” Shehzad said.
Mohammad Amir was part of Pakistan’s winning teams at the 2009 T20 World Cup and the 2017 Champions Trophy. Although he is now reportedly eligible for England, he has previously said he would not represent England and remains committed to Pakistan.
Pakistani players have not taken part in the IPL since 2008 because of strained political relations between Pakistan and India.
Former all-rounder Azhar Mahmood remains the only Pakistan-born cricketer to have played in the IPL while holding British citizenship.
