The Walled City of Lahore Authority (WCLA) has directed market committees across the city to ensure the implementation of fire safety measures in all commercial markets within seven days.

According to the authority, the directives have been issued under the Walled City of Lahore Building Regulations 2017due to the risk of fire incidents in commercial areas.

Shopkeepers and market administrations have been instructed to comply with all fire safety requirements within the given deadline.

Markets have been ordered to install functional and standard fire extinguishers and keep them ready for use at all times. The authority has also made it mandatory to install and maintain fire alarms, fire detection systems, and fire fighting systems.

The directives also require the immediate replacement of faulty, damaged, or overloaded electrical wiring. Market committees have been told to ensure that switchboards, electrical distribution systems, and wiring are safe and properly maintained.

The authority has further instructed markets to keep emergency exits, stairways, and access routes for fire brigade vehicles clear at all times. Any obstacles blocking exit points must be removed to ensure quick evacuation during emergencies.

All fire safety equipment must be regularly inspected, repaired, and maintained. Markets have been directed to submit a compliance report to the WCLA within seven days, along with photographs as proof of the completed measures.

The authority warned that legal action will be taken against those who fail to comply with the instructions. It added that markets may also be sealed in case of violations.
