The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Thursday launched a health insurance facility for around 11,500 employees, with Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab calling it the first municipal institution in Pakistan to introduce a healthcare insurance policy for its workforce.
The launch ceremony was held at the KMC headquarters, where officials also distributed medical insurance cards, service vehicles, and laptops to employees and departments.
Speaking at the event, Mayor Wahab said KMC employees previously faced delays in obtaining medical treatment as emergency and hospital-related files had to pass through multiple departments before approval from the Mayor’s Office.
He said the current City Council adopted a labour-friendly policy to ensure timely healthcare access for workers, adding that even minor delays in medical treatment could have serious consequences.
Under the new insurance policy, KMC employees will receive medical coverage ranging from Rs150,000 to Rs600,000 and will be able to access treatment at around 200 hospitals using health cards.
The mayor said the KMC was promoting transparency and accountability to improve public services and employee welfare.
He also announced plans to introduce a one-window digital system for property mutation and issuance of no-objection certificates (NOCs).
Citizens will be able to apply online through a website or mobile application, while challans and related procedures will also be processed digitally to reduce corruption and improve efficiency.
Mayor Wahab added that computers and essential equipment had been provided to departments to remove administrative hurdles and prevent delays caused by outdated systems or a lack of resources.
He said additional vehicles had also been supplied to strengthen public service delivery across Karachi.
