A 24-year-old man has died of rabies at Jinnah Hospital in Karachi after being bitten by a stray dog around two months ago.

The victim, identified as Shehryar from Qayyumabad, was brought to the hospital’s emergency department at around 3:40am. Doctors said he had been experiencing irritability, anxiety and hydrophobia, or fear of water, for about a week.

According to hospital officials, Shehryar had not received a rabies vaccination after the dog bite. He was treated after doctors suspected rabies encephalitis.

The Jinnah Hospital neuromedicine team examined him and provided treatment, including sedative medication. However, his condition deteriorated and he died at around 9am.

The death comes amid a growing number of rabies cases linked to stray dog bites in Karachi.

According to available figures, 21 people have died from rabies in Karachi this year, including seven at Jinnah Hospital and 11 at Indus Hospital.

More than 30,000 dog-bite cases have reportedly been recorded in the city so far this year, highlighting the continuing public health threat posed by stray dogs.

Medical experts have repeatedly stressed the importance of immediately seeking medical care after a dog bite and completing the recommended anti-rabies vaccination course.
