Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday laid the foundation stone for a Rs. 2 billion development package for the Sindh Industrial Trading Estate (SITE) to improve infrastructure in one of the city’s largest industrial areas.
The project includes the rehabilitation of major roads, drainage and sewerage systems, green belts, and other municipal facilities.
The mayor said the Sindh government had approved and released Rs. 9.5 billion for the rehabilitation of industrial areas across Karachi. Trade and industrial associations will oversee the development work to ensure projects address the needs of each industrial area.
He said the government had changed the previous system by allowing trade associations to identify priority projects, select contractors, and choose construction materials to speed up development.
Wahab added that the provincial and local governments were working together to improve Karachi’s infrastructure and remove obstacles that delayed development projects.
He also announced that the TP-1 Sewage Treatment Plant would soon begin operations with a treatment capacity of 35 million gallons per day (MGD). The city plans to add another 65 MGD by December, increasing the additional treatment capacity to 100 MGD.
