Huawei appears to be exploring a new foldable phone design after becoming the first brand to launch a tri-fold smartphone with the Mate XT Ultimate in 2024.
A new patent shared by xleaks7 and PostFast shows a vertical tri-fold design, suggesting that Huawei may be looking to bring the tri-fold concept to the flip-foldable category.
The patent shows a design that has not yet appeared in any commercially available phone.
While the images are only mockups of what could eventually become part of Huawei’s Pura lineup, the concept shows a device with two hinges, similar to the Mate XT Ultimate.
These hinges allow the phone to fold into a compact form when not in use.
The S-shaped foldable design opens up to reveal a large screen. When folded, the device can shrink to around one-third of its full size, making it more compact than a regular large-screen foldable.
The patent description also mentions a special shield designed to reduce signal loss when the phone is folded.
Huawei has not confirmed whether this patent will turn into a commercial product.
For now, the design only shows that the company is exploring a new foldable form factor beyond its existing tri-fold smartphone.
