Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Jahan Ara Hassan has said that around 400,000 people die annually in Pakistan due to high blood pressure.
Speaking as the chief guest at an awareness seminar and panel discussion held at the Dow Institute of Cardiology on World Hypertension Day, she said that globally about 1.4 billion people are suffering from hypertension, while the disease causes nearly 10 million deaths worldwide each year.
She added that high blood pressure leads to several serious health complications, including stroke, heart disease, kidney failure, and vision impairment.
Prof. Hassan said that DUHS has planned to utilize more than 100 laboratory collection units across Karachi as primary healthcare centers, where screening, monitoring, and treatment of hypertension will also be provided.
Speakers at the seminar noted that around 33 million people in Pakistan are affected by high blood pressure, but only 12% have it under control.
They further highlighted that nearly 50% of patients are unaware of their condition, while hypertension has significantly increased cases of heart attacks and strokes in the country.
