Muharram-ul-Haram 1448 AH is likely to begin in Pakistan on June 17, according to projections released by the Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council based on astronomical calculations.

The council’s Secretary General Khalid Ejaz Mufti said the new moon is expected to be born at 7:54am Pakistan Standard Time on June 15. However, he noted that the crescent’s age at sunset on the same day would be less than 12 hours across the country, making its sighting highly unlikely.

He explained that although the moon is expected to remain above the horizon for around 37 minutes in Karachi and 42 minutes in Peshawar after sunset, its young age would reduce the chances of visibility.

According to the council, the Muharram crescent is not expected to be sighted on the evening of June 15, even under clear weather conditions and with the use of optical aids.

As a result, the council expects Zil Hajj 1447 AH to complete 30 days, with Muharram 1, 1448 AH likely to fall on June 17. The final announcement regarding the sighting of the Muharram moon and the start of the new Islamic year will be made by the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.
