The federal government has officially announced public holidays on 25 and 26 June 2026 on account of 9 and 10 Muharram-ul-Haram, with offices across the country set to remain closed for Ashura.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the two-day public holiday, after which the Cabinet Division issued a formal notification. The holidays will fall on Thursday and Friday and will apply to all government offices operating under both five-day and six-day work weeks.
With the notification now in place, public institutions across the country will remain shut on both days in observance of Ashura.
The decision comes as authorities continue preparations for Muharram processions and majalis in different parts of the country. Administrative and security arrangements are being finalized to manage religious gatherings and maintain law and order during the two days.
Ashura, observed on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, holds deep religious significance and is marked every year with processions, gatherings, and mourning events across Pakistan.
The latest notification confirms that 25 and 26 June, corresponding to 9 and 10 Muharram 1448 Hijri, will be observed as public holidays nationwide.
