A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court (LHC) challenging heavy traffic fines and vehicle taxes imposed in Punjab, arguing that the measures are unconstitutional and adversely affect citizens.
The petition was filed by Jameela Fatima through Advocate Muhammad Azhar Siddique. The petitioner contended that traffic police are imposing excessive fines on motorists across the province, which violate constitutional rights.
According to the petition, the increased traffic challans are inconsistent with the Constitution and place an undue burden on the public. The petitioner requested the court to seek details from the Punjab government regarding traffic fines and vehicle taxes collected over the past five years.
The petition also asked the court to declare the imposition of heavy traffic challans illegal. The legal challenge comes weeks after the Punjab government introduced relief measures under the Provincial Motor Vehicles Bill 2026, which replaced the Provincial Motor Vehicles Ordinance 2025.
Under the new law, penalties for multiple traffic violations were reduced and imprisonment was abolished for most traffic offences. The legislation, approved by Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan, significantly lowered fines and eased several punishment provisions related to traffic violations across the province.
The Lahore High Court is expected to take up the matter for further proceedings.
