As a severe heatwave grips much of Pakistan, health experts have warned that extreme temperatures could trigger heatstroke, a life-threatening condition with a mortality rate ranging from 10 to 80 percent depending on how quickly treatment is provided.

Experts said people who spend prolonged periods outdoors during peak daytime heat are at the highest risk. According to health professionals, delayed treatment can push the mortality rate as high as 80 percent, while early diagnosis and rapid cooling can reduce it to around 10 percent.

Common symptoms include high body temperature, hot and flushed skin, dizziness, weakness, severe headache, confusion, hallucinations and slurred speech. Anyone displaying these signs should be taken to the nearest healthcare facility immediately.

Health experts identified infants, elderly people, athletes and outdoor workers as the most vulnerable groups. They urged the public to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, stay hydrated, wear loose-fitting light-colored clothing and never leave children inside parked vehicles.
