A parliamentary committee on Thursday called for reconsidering the government’s decision to reduce speed limits on motorways and national highways. The matter was discussed during a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) sub committee chaired by Tariq Fazal Chaudhry. Committee member Rana Qasim Noon proposed restoring the previous speed limit for cars on motorways from 100 kilometres per hour back to 120 kilometres per hour.

The meeting was attended by the communications secretary and the Inspector General of the National Highways and Motorway Police. During the session, the committee reviewed audit reports of the Ministry of Communications for the years 2003-04 and 2009-11.

At the start of the meeting, lawmakers discussed the recently reduced speed limits on motorways and highways. Rana Qasim Noon urged the motorway police chief to revisit the decision and consider restoring the previous speed limits for motorists.

In response, the Inspector General of the motorway police told the committee that the department only implements decisions made by the government.
