India has fully opened all spillway gates of the Salal Dam, causing water discharge into the Chenab River towards Pakistan and prompting an alert for low-lying areas.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division, around 150,000 cusecs of floodwater has been released from the dam. Officials warned that Head Marala, Khanki and Qadirabad on the Chenab may face severe pressure due to the rising water flow.
The statement said a high flood wave is likely to pass through Head Marala within the next 48 hours. Local administrations in areas linked to the Chenab River have been directed to remain on alert.
Meanwhile, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert for the sixth spell of monsoon rains across Punjab.
Rain is forecast in several districts from tonight until August 21, including Lahore, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Jhelum, Chakwal, Talagang, Attock, Sialkot, Narowal and Mandi Bahauddin.
Rain is also expected in Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad and Wazirabad.
On August 20 and 21, more showers are likely in Kasur, Okara, Sheikhupura, Nankana Sahib, Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali, Noorpur Thal, Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal, Pakpattan, Bahawalnagar, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan.
Authorities warned of urban flooding in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore, while landslides may occur in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly regions.
