The Directorate of Drug Control has issued an alert declaring different batches of four medicines as fake or substandard after laboratory testing.

According to the regulator, a batch of pain relief tablet Brexin was found to be counterfeit in lab tests. A batch of Danzen DS, used for pain and inflammation, was also declared fake.

The authority further said that a batch of Tonoflex-P tablets was found to be counterfeit during testing, while a batch of the antibiotic tablet Novidat was also declared fake.

Following the findings, the Directorate of Drug Control has ordered the immediate removal of the affected batches from the market.

Authorities have directed pharmacies, distributors, and other stakeholders to ensure that the identified batches are withdrawn without delay to prevent their further sale and use.

Earlier, the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan launched a separate crackdown on substandard auto-disable syringes and declared 17 batches manufactured by 11 companies non-compliant with safety standards.

Those syringes, ranging from 3ml to 5ml, were found to have failed the required auto-disable functionality tests conducted by the Central Drug Laboratory and the Drug Testing Laboratory Karachi. According to the regulator, faults in the locking mechanism meant the syringes could potentially be reused, creating serious public health risks.

DRAP had warned that reused syringes could contribute to the spread of dangerous infectious diseases, including hepatitis and HIV. It had also imposed an immediate ban on the sale and use of the affected syringe batches and directed provincial authorities to remove them from the market.
