The federal government has set July 31 as the deadline for completing the Sangjani Interchange on GT Road, a key part of the project to extend Margalla Road and connect it directly to the motorway.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced the timeline during a visit to the project site, where he reviewed progress and received a detailed briefing on the scheme.

The 2.7-kilometer project includes a three-lane carriageway on both sides, a two-lane service road, two underpasses and a bridge. An interchange at Sangjani is also being built as part of the plan and has now been fast-tracked for completion by the end of July to ease traffic bottlenecks on GT Road.

Naqvi said the project would provide a faster and easier route between Islamabad and the motorway, while also reducing traffic pressure and travel time for commuters. He directed officials to use all available resources to ensure timely completion.

At present, Margalla Road ends near D-12, forcing traffic from sectors F, G and H to rely on Srinagar Highway or IJP Road to access the motorway. Once completed, the new link is expected to provide northern Islamabad with direct access to M-1, easing congestion on major routes including Kashmir Highway and 9th Avenue.

Officials told the minister that while the Sangjani Interchange is targeted for completion by July 31 this year, the broader project is expected to be completed by December 2026. The second phase, stretching 2.5 kilometers from the interchange to the motorway, will be executed by the Punjab government.

The extension has long been demanded by residents of D-12, E-11 and nearby areas, who face heavy traffic while travelling towards the motorway, especially during peak hours.
