Apple has reportedly canceled its planned all-glass iPhone for 2027 after struggling to achieve acceptable production yields for the ambitious design.
Jefferies analyst Edison Lee said supply chain checks indicate that Apple has scrapped the all-glass model that was expected to launch in September 2027 to mark the iPhone’s 20th anniversary. Apple has not announced the device or confirmed its cancellation.
Jefferies said the main problem was poor manufacturing yield, meaning too many units or components failed to meet production requirements.
The cancellation could also hurt Apple’s efforts to introduce more expensive iPhones as memory costs continue to rise. Jefferies viewed the planned device as an opportunity for Apple to increase its average selling price and protect margins against higher component expenses.
The all-glass iPhone was reportedly expected to have a blended retail average selling price of around $2,060, making it significantly more expensive than Apple’s conventional flagship phones.
Jefferies also believed Apple eventually intended to bring elements of the all-glass design to future Pro and Pro Max models, which could have allowed the company to further increase prices and margins.
The rumored anniversary iPhone was expected to feature a heavily curved glass design with a display bending around all four edges.
Earlier reports said Apple was working with Samsung on a custom micro-curved OLED panel for the device. The complicated panel design was intended to create a nearly bezel-free appearance while maintaining a thinner and brighter screen.
However, previous reports also pointed to technical problems with the display. The materials used for the curved design were reportedly causing distortion around the edges and reducing maximum brightness.
The original report speculates that these display problems may have contributed to the low production yields, although Jefferies did not specifically identify them as the reason for the cancellation.
For now, Jefferies has not indicated whether Apple could revive the all-glass design for a later iPhone generation. The reported cancellation applies specifically to the ambitious all-glass anniversary model rather than Apple’s entire future iPhone lineup.
