Reports claim internet users across Pakistan are unable to access Al Jazeera.
Several countries blocked Al Jazeera’s websites, suspended its broadcasts or closed its local offices at different times.
Israel: Israel first shut Al Jazeera’s local operations in May 2024. On July 23, 2026, Israeli authorities extended the restriction for another 90 days. The order covers the network’s office, television broadcasts and access through digital platforms inside Israel.
Democratic Republic of Congo: Congolese authorities banned Al Jazeera in January 2025 and revoked the network’s press credentials. No widely reported official reversal followed the announcement.
Egypt: Egypt blocked Al Jazeera’s main website and several other news platforms in 2017. Internet measurements recorded restrictions across major Egyptian service providers.
Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Jordan: These countries restricted Al Jazeera’s websites, broadcasts or offices during the 2017 diplomatic dispute with Qatar. The UAE later restored access to Al Jazeera and other Qatari news websites after relations improved.
Iraq: Iraqi authorities have closed or suspended Al Jazeera’s Baghdad operations several times. The most recent major closure came in 2016, when regulators revoked its licence and stopped its journalists from working in the country.
India: India took Al Jazeera English off air for five days in April 2015 following a dispute over maps shown during its broadcasts. The suspension was temporary.
Iran, Kuwait and Sudan: These countries have also ordered temporary office closures or reporting restrictions against Al Jazeera at different points in the network’s history.
Palestine : Palestine suspended Al Jazeera’s operations in parts of West Bank in January 2025. However, the ban was lifted five months later.
Al Jazeera launched in Doha, Qatar, on November 1, 1996. It entered an Arab media market that was largely dominated by government-controlled television channels. The network presented itself as an alternative platform offering debates, interviews and extensive regional news coverage.
The broadcaster expanded rapidly during major international events. It gained global attention through its reporting from Iraq in 1998 and its extensive coverage of the war in Afghanistan in 2001. It later covered the Iraq War and the Arab Spring across several countries.
Al Jazeera launched its Arabic website in 2001 and its English website in 2003. It then introduced the Al Jazeera English television channel in 2006, followed by its documentary, investigative and digital divisions. The network launched AJ+ in 2014 and the Al Jazeera 360 platform in 2024.
Today, Al Jazeera operates as a large international media network with Arabic and English news channels, documentaries, investigative journalism and digital platforms. According to the organisation, it has more than 70 bureaus and over 3,000 employees from more than 95 countries. Its services reach audiences in more than 150 countries and territories. The organisation also states that it receives part of its funding from the Qatari government.
