X has launched new video recording and editing tools as it attempts to encourage creators to publish original content instead of reposting material taken from other platforms.
The new editor is initially available through X’s iOS app. The company has not yet released it on Android because that version of the app is still being rebuilt, according to TechCrunch .
The editor allows creators to add captions in multiple languages and customize their appearance.
It also includes a green-screen feature that lets users place photos from their phone’s camera roll or existing X posts behind their videos.
X Head of Product Nikita Bier said supporting original creators and giving them better production tools is one of the company’s main priorities. He added that X plans to introduce further improvements to the video editor in the coming weeks.
Today we're launching a brand new Video Editor and Recorder in the iOS app.
This includes some long-awaited features:
• Overlay captions in multiple languages and customize their look • Green Screen—Add custom backgrounds using posts or photos from your camera roll

X wants the editor to provide enough functionality for creators to produce videos specifically for the platform instead of uploading clips already available elsewhere.
Bier said many leading accounts on X regularly post stolen or recycled videos, including content that first became popular several years earlier.
However, editing tools alone may not solve the problem. Reposting existing material remains an easy way for accounts to generate views and potentially earn money without producing anything original.

X also faces competition from TikTok, YouTube and Meta, which already have established creator programs and more consistent monetization systems.
Creators are unlikely to publish exclusively on X unless the platform can offer a large audience of genuine users and dependable financial rewards.
X also lacks some of the copyright-protection tools available on competing platforms.
Meta allows eligible Reels creators to identify copied content and either block it or add attribution links. YouTube also provides systems for detecting and requesting the removal of unauthorized uploads.
Bots remain another obstacle to X’s effort to build a stronger creator ecosystem.
Automated accounts can inflate views, scrape original posts and distribute stolen material. Bier said in April that X was identifying and suspending 208 bots every minute.
He had previously said that nearly half of X’s product team was working on features intended to reduce spam.
X is not alone in dealing with increased automated and AI-generated spam. Reddit has also introduced AI tools to address the growing volume of spam enabled by large language models.
Digg , which attempted to compete with Reddit, shut down its application earlier this year after saying it lacked the resources needed to combat the amount of spam it encountered.
Bier said posts containing video already generate close to half of all impressions on X.
The new editor is therefore part of a wider effort to improve a format that already represents a major share of activity on the platform, rather than simply an attempt to copy TikTok.
X recently introduced other creator-focused video tools, including React with Video, which allows users to record green-screen or split-screen responses to existing posts.
The company will need to combine these creation features with stronger copyright controls, reliable payouts, and continued action against bots if it wants creators to produce original videos specifically for X.
