X is ending its existing Revenue Sharing program and replacing it with a new creator monetization system called Original Content Rewards.
The social media platform, now owned by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, said it will stop accepting new participants into Revenue Sharing. Existing members will continue earning through the current program until September 7.
Starting September 8, eligible creators will be able to apply for Original Content Rewards.
Creators will still need to subscribe to one of X’s Premium plans to participate.
They must also have at least 500 verified followers and generate 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users over 90 days.
However, the biggest change is the platform’s stronger focus on original content.
X said eligible content can include original reporting and analysis, photos and videos created by the user, and original memes and graphics.
Commentary can also qualify, but creators who regularly use material produced by others will need to add meaningful original value for the content to meet X’s guidelines.
X also provided examples of content that will not qualify as original.
This includes posts copied directly from another account, content downloaded from one account and uploaded again by another user, and reposted material that does not include meaningful changes or transformation.
The move follows several previous attempts by X to change its Revenue Sharing program.
In April, the company reduced payments to content aggregators and accounts it described as clickbait-focused. Earlier changes had also sparked criticism from popular creators who were earning money under the existing system.
Musk previously reversed some changes after backlash, including an adjustment that would have given more weight to a creator’s local audience when calculating payouts.
X executive Allegra Jacchia said the current Revenue Sharing program had reached a stage where its incentives were no longer aligned with the company’s goals.
She said creators should focus on bringing new content to X instead of trying to maximize payouts.
Rather than continuing to add more rules and exceptions to the existing system, Jacchia said X decided to build a new program designed from the beginning to reward originality.
She added that X will continue refining the program, improving its models and raising its standards over time.
