WhatsApp is about to add the ability to create stickers directly from images, as spotted in the Android beta version 2.26.16.7 on the Google Play Store. This should allow for much faster sticker making.
Previously, users could create stickers by opening an image and selecting the “create sticker” option from the overflow menu.
That process opened the sticker editor, where users could customize the sticker before sending it, saving it, or marking it as a favorite.
With the latest beta version, WhatsApp is adding a new menu that appears when users tap on an image. Here is what it looks like.
This menu includes two options. The first opens the sticker editor, allowing users to choose from different sticker variations and customize the result before use.
The second option automatically creates a sticker using what WhatsApp selects as the most suitable version of the image.
After generating the sticker, WhatsApp shows a bottom sheet with several actions. Users can add the sticker to favorites, save it to a sticker pack, edit it further, or send it directly in the current chat. This shortcut is designed to reduce manual steps and speed up sticker creation. If the feature is not enabled, users will continue to see the reaction tray instead.
The new Android feature works in a similar way to subject extraction tools already available on iOS. On iPhone, users can isolate a subject from an image and use it in supported apps such as WhatsApp to create stickers.
WhatsApp is now bringing a similar experience to Android users.
The feature is currently available to some beta testers using WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.16.7. WhatsApp is expected to expand access gradually over the coming weeks.
