US President Donald Trump’s new T1 smartphone is facing questions over its “Made in America” branding after newly shipped units appeared to closely match an existing HTC device.
The phone was initially believed to be linked to another low-cost Android handset, but fresh comparisons suggest it may actually be a modified version of the HTC U24 Pro, a model released in 2024.
The hardware similarities are hard to miss. Both phones appear to have the same speaker grille, notification light, proximity sensor, and headphone jack placement. The specifications also line up closely, including a 6.8-inch display, a Snapdragon 7-series chipset, 12GB RAM, and 512GB internal storage.
The camera setup further adds to the comparison. The Trump T1 reportedly carries a 50MP front camera, while the rear includes a 50MP main sensor, an 8MP ultra-wide lens, and a 50MP telephoto camera, the same combination associated with the HTC device.
Its price has also raised eyebrows. At $499.99, the T1 sits far above the price range of budget phones it was earlier compared with, but remains close to the price of imported 512GB HTC U24 Pro units.
The controversy has also put renewed attention on Trump Mobile’s manufacturing claims. While the handset was promoted as “Made in America,” packaging seen by buyers reportedly uses the wording “proudly assembled in the U.S.” instead.
Other details have added to the scrutiny. Some users pointed out that the American flag printed on the back of the phone appears to show 11 stripes rather than the traditional 13.
Software support is another area of concern. The device reportedly ships with Android 15, and Trump Mobile has yet to publicly outline any software update or security patch policy for the phone.
