Sanitation workers under the “Suthra Punjab Program” staged an unusual protest in Okara after not receiving their salaries for two months.
In response to the delayed payments, workers dumped garbage on streets, in neighborhoods, and across marketplaces, deliberately making public areas dirty. Videos showing employees throwing trash onto roads have circulated widely.
The protesting workers said they are required to work 14-hour shifts but are not being paid. They added that due to rising inflation and lack of income, they are struggling to survive and are being pushed toward extreme financial hardship.
The workers have called on the Chief Minister of Punjab to take action against those responsible and to ensure immediate payment of their salaries.
Earlier, similar protests were reported in Faisalabad, where hundreds of sanitation workers and rickshaw drivers rallied over two months of unpaid wages under an outsourcing system linked to the Suthra Punjab Authority.
Protesters marched to the Deputy Commissioner’s Office, blocked roads, and dumped large amounts of garbage at the entrance to highlight their anger.
Labor leaders also alleged that workers were not properly registered for social security and retirement benefits, and that contributions had not been deposited for months, depriving many workers of essential welfare and medical support.
Authorities later issued notices to the outsourcing company and directed the immediate processing of pending payments.
