The Sindh government has terminated the construction contract for a key section of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Red Line project in Karachi and plans to re-award the work on an emergency basis, Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Wednesday.
The cancelled contract covers the Mosamiyat to Numaish section of the project. Memon said the decision was taken due to delays in execution by the contractor, despite multiple warnings to complete the work within the stipulated timeframe.
He added that the government had attempted to address the contractor’s concerns, including issues related to rate escalation, but progress remained unsatisfactory.
Construction on the Red Line had resumed in November after the removal of several bottlenecks following the chief minister’s intervention. However, the project still lacks a clear completion timeline, with commuters on University Road continuing to face difficulties.
Memon said the Asian Development Bank, which is financing the project, had also expressed concerns over the slow pace of work, along with stakeholders raising issues related to environmental impact.
He added that the remaining work would now be carried out on an emergency basis and split into smaller packages, which will be awarded to multiple contractors to expedite completion.
