Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has announced that Shahrah-e-Bhutto will be opened to the public on May 23.
Pakistan’s People Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari set to inaugurate the project. The announcement was made during Memon’s visit to inspect ongoing work and review progress on the major road project.
Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the chief minister’s special assistant on investment and public-private partnership, and Deputy Mayor Salman Abdullah Murad were also present during the visit.
Speaking to the media, Memon said Shahrah-e-Bhutto was being developed under a public-private partnership model and described it as a major step toward improving urban mobility in Karachi. He said the road would make travel easier for citizens, cut commuting time, and reduce traffic pressure on key routes.
He also said the groundbreaking ceremony for the proposed bridge linking Karachi Port to Qayyumabad would be held on the same occasion. According to him, the new link would slash travel time from hours to just a few minutes once completed.
Local Government Minister Nasir Shah said infrastructure was being upgraded and modernized across Sindh, especially in Karachi, and called Shahrah-e-Bhutto a major gift for the city’s residents.

During the same visit, Memon also reviewed progress on the BRT Red Line project, where he was briefed by TransKarachi CEO Zubair Channa, engineers, consultants, and other officials.
He said work on the mixed-traffic lane was continuing round the clock, while the Frontier Works Organization was moving quickly on Lot 2 of the project. He admitted that mixed traffic on University Road had become a serious issue, but said utility-related hurdles were being addressed in phases.
Memon said shifting utilities could not be done in a single day because it could disrupt services for millions of people, especially in densely populated areas. He acknowledged that work at some points had taken longer than expected and apologized for the delays, but said the BRT project would provide long-term benefits to the public.
He added that despite it being a Sunday, officials were present in the field and inspections of the BRT Yellow Line and Shahrah-e-Bhutto were also under way.
