The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has issued a fresh warning about the growing threat of phishing attacks and online fraud, highlighting the methods cybercriminals use to steal personal and financial information from unsuspecting individuals.

According to the authority, fraudsters are increasingly using fake emails, messages, phone calls, and fraudulent job advertisements to target internet users across the country.

PTA said online scammers often impersonate reputable companies and organizations by using their names, logos, and branding to appear legitimate. These fraudsters may ask victims to share money, photographs, location details, or other sensitive information under various pretexts. The regulator warned that such deceptive schemes are designed to gain access to personal data and financial resources.

The authority advised citizens to remain cautious when receiving unexpected communications, particularly those that create a sense of urgency or request confidential information. Users have been urged to verify the authenticity of emails, messages, and calls before taking any action.

PTA also recommended using strong and unique passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and reporting suspicious communications through official channels.

The regulator stressed that individuals should never disclose one-time passwords (OTPs), PINs, passwords, banking details, or other financial information to unknown persons. PTA further cautioned users against clicking on suspicious links, downloading files from unverified sources, or responding to messages demanding immediate payment or action without proper verification.

Emphasizing the importance of digital awareness, PTA said a few moments of caution can prevent identity theft and financial loss. The regulator advised job seekers to verify the legitimacy of online vacancies before submitting applications or personal information.

PTA reiterated its message of “Think Before You Click – Verify Before You Trust” and encouraged the public to follow its official platforms and digital assistance services for guidance on staying safe online.
