The Ruet-e-Hilal Research Council has indicated that Eid ul Adha is likely to be observed on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, based on its forecast for the Zilhaj moon sighting.
According to the council, the Zilhaj moon is expected to be visible on the evening of Sunday, May 17, if weather conditions remain clear, which would make Monday, May 18, the first day of Zilhaj.
The council’s Secretary General, Khalid Ejaz Mufti, stated that the new moon will be born at 1:01 AM (Pakistan Standard Time) during the night between May 16 and May 17.
He explained that by sunset on May 17, the moon’s age will exceed 18 hours in most parts of Pakistan, making it suitable for sighting.
He added that the time gap between sunset and moonset will be around 55 minutes in Karachi and 63 minutes in Peshawar, increasing the chances of visibility to the naked eye in areas with clear skies.
However, the council noted that if the moon is not sighted on May 17 due to cloudy conditions, the month of Zilqad will complete 30 days, and the first of Zilhaj will then fall on Tuesday, May 19. In that case, Eid ul Adha will also be observed a day later, on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
The council also expects that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia may observe Eid ul Adha on the same day this year, which is likely to be May 27.
