The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued its outlook for May 2026, forecasting above-normal rainfall in many parts of the country and warmer-than-usual temperatures nationwide.
According to the monthly outlook, wet conditions are expected to persist during May, with the strongest rainfall anomalies likely in the northern half of the country. These include Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, northern Punjab, Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan and northern Balochistan.
The department said southern parts of the country, including Sindh, southern Punjab and Balochistan, are also expected to receive slightly above-normal rainfall during the month, though the intensity is likely to weaken from north to south.
For temperatures, the outlook shows above-normal conditions across Pakistan, with the highest departures expected in Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Warmer-than-usual weather is also likely in parts of Sindh and western Balochistan.
The report said most forecast models agree on a higher probability of above-normal rainfall in northern and northwestern Pakistan, while central Punjab, southern Sindh and southwestern Balochistan are more likely to see near-normal rainfall.
The PMD also warned that despite the expected rainfall, plain areas of Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan could still face heat spikes and heatwave-like conditions between rain spells.
It added that above-normal rainfall may improve water availability and support irrigation needs for seasonal vegetables and newly sown Kharif crops, especially in Sindh and Punjab. However, the forecast also raises the risk of flash floods, landslides, urban flooding, strong winds, dust storms and hailstorms in vulnerable areas.
The department further warned that higher temperatures in northern high-altitude regions could accelerate snowmelt and increase the risk of glacier-related hazards, while rising heat in southern areas may also raise the risk of vector-borne diseases such as dengue.
PMD has advised farmers to follow weather advisories before irrigation or harvesting and urged travelers and tourists to remain cautious during rainfall events.
