The Punjab Excise Department has suspended the registration status of more than 850,000 vehicles belonging to token tax defaulters as authorities intensify efforts to recover outstanding dues before the end of the fiscal year, according to City42.
Excise officials said strict measures have been ordered during the final seven days of the fiscal year to boost tax collection. The department has directed field officers to take action against vehicle owners who have failed to pay token tax.
According to officials, more than 1.7 million vehicle owners across Punjab are required to pay annual token tax. Nearly 875,000 owners have already paid around Rs. 9 billion in token taxes, while more than 850,000 others still owe over Rs. 9 billion.
In light of the outstanding amount, authorities have suspended the registration status of defaulting vehicles in the Excise system and launched a province-wide enforcement campaign to recover pending taxes before June 30.
The department has instructed Excise and Taxation Officers (ETOs) to establish checkpoints at various locations from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. under their supervision. Daily reports on tax recovery and enforcement operations will also be submitted to the Director General’s Office.
Officials have made it clear that the registration status of defaulting vehicles will not be restored until all outstanding token tax dues have been paid in full.
