The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a heatwave advisory for Eid ul Azha holidays and directed district administrations across Punjab to implement emergency precautionary measures amid forecasts of extremely high temperatures.

According to the advisory, the heatwave is expected to continue from May 25 to May 31 due to a high-pressure weather system forecast by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PDMA said temperatures in Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad and Sialkot could range between 42 and 45 degrees Celsius, while southern districts including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Rajanpur and Sargodha may witness temperatures between 47 and 50 degrees Celsius.

Authorities also warned that nighttime temperatures are expected to remain unusually high, increasing health risks for children, elderly citizens and outdoor workers.

The PDMA instructed divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to establish cooling and heat relief points at cattle markets, bus terminals, railway stations, hospitals, Eid prayer grounds and major public markets.

District administrations were also directed to ensure the availability of drinking water, oral rehydration salts (ORS), shaded areas, fans and first-aid facilities at public locations during the Eid holidays.

According to the authority, mobile heat relief teams and emergency response units will remain operational at livestock markets and crowded commercial areas. PDMA Director General Umar Javed advised citizens to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities between 10am and 5pm, stay hydrated and wear light-colored cotton clothing during the heatwave.
