The Punjab Bar Council has suspended the licenses of 777 lawyers who failed to pass the mandatory Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law GAT).
According to the Bar Council, the affected lawyers received their licenses without taking the Law GAT after the Lahore High Court issued directions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The council said it had granted licenses to around 3,400 lawyers under those arrangements. However, it later directed all of them to pass the Law GAT between 2022 and 2023 to retain their licenses.
The Bar Council said many of those lawyers have since passed the examination and submitted their result cards. However, 777 lawyers have yet to clear the test, leading to the suspension of their licenses.
The council added that it is sending the record of the suspended lawyers to all session judges and bar associations across Punjab for further action.
