The PC-1 worth Rs. 4.8 billion for the Thallian interchange of the Rawalpindi Ring Road project has been approved by the relevant authority.

The interchange is part of the wider Rawalpindi Ring Road scheme, whose overall cost, including the Thallian component, is estimated at Rs. 51.4 billion.

Officials said the interchange will be developed as part of the project’s second phase, along with a two-lane motorway link road beyond Thallian to be constructed by the National Highway Authority.

According to sources, the interchange is being treated as an important extension of the Ring Road because it will improve onward connectivity once the full project is completed. However, this section will not be opened with the first operational phase of the road.

Sources in the Rawalpindi Development Authority said funds are available within the overall project cost for the acquisition of additional land required for the interchange.

Meanwhile, officials say work on the main 38.6-kilometer Rawalpindi Ring Road route has reached around 85 per cent completion, and that stretch is expected to be opened for traffic by mid-June without the Thallian interchange.
