Minister of State for Health Dr Mukhtar Ahmad Bharath has warned that Pakistan’s population could reach 400 million by 2040 if growth trends continue unchecked.
Speaking at a ceremony at the Basic Health Unit in Tarlai, he said public awareness and individual responsibility are essential to address the country’s rapid population increase.
He said maternal and child healthcare, along with family planning, must become a national priority.
Dr Bharath said parents should assess whether they can provide adequate nutrition, education, immunization, healthcare and proper upbringing before planning families.
He added that a healthy society depends on every child receiving basic rights.
The minister also said the use of modern contraceptive methods remains low in Pakistan compared with countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Turkiye.
He warned that low family planning use contributes to unintended pregnancies and unsafe abortions, which put women’s health at risk and increase pressure on the healthcare system.
He urged Pakistanis to adopt family planning responsibly for the welfare of future generations.
A health ministry spokesperson said China, in collaboration with the UN Population Fund, has provided Pakistan with reproductive health and family planning medicines, supplies and equipment worth $2 million.
