Pakistan registered an unwanted record after suffering a 104-run defeat against Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
Bangladesh sealed a commanding victory on the fifth and final day, with fast bowler Nahid Rana producing a sensational performance to dismantle Pakistan’s batting lineup.
Rana completed a memorable five-wicket haul by dismissing Shaheen Shah Afridi for a 13-ball duck, bowling Pakistan out for 163 while Bangladesh defended a target of 268.
Following the defeat, Pakistan became only the second team after Zimbabwe to lose three consecutive Tests against Bangladesh. The Tigers had also clean-swept Pakistan 2-0 in a historic series win last year.
The result also added to Shan Masood’s poor captaincy record. He now has the joint second-most defeats as Pakistan’s Test captain, with 11 losses in 15 matches. Misbah-ul-Haq remains the only Pakistan captain with more Test defeats, having led the side in 56 matches.
Nahid Rana was the standout performer for Bangladesh, while Taskin Ahmed and Taijul Islam picked up two wickets each. Mehidy Hasan Miraz also contributed with one wicket.
Pakistan’s fightback was led by debutant Abdullah Fazal, who top-scored with 66. However, the visitors suffered a dramatic collapse in the final session.
Saud Shakeel and Mohammad Rizwan briefly steadied the innings with a partnership and looked capable of dragging Pakistan back into the contest.
However, Nahid struck in consecutive overs to remove both batters after they scored 15 runs each, ending Pakistan’s hopes of survival.
Pakistan then lost their final three wickets for just 10 runs as Bangladesh completed an emphatic win.
The second Test will be played from May 16 to 20 at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.
