Pakistan Railways has decided to roll out a 1,700-kilometer fiber-optic network and introduce smart railway systems as part of a major digitization program.
The program aims to modernize railway operations, freight management, and passenger services across the country.
According to official project documents, the initiative is part of Pakistan Railways’ Railway Advance Infrastructure Network, known as RAIN. The project has been described as the first major revenue-focused digitization project in the department’s 78-year history.
The project aims to build a complete digital ecosystem for railway operations and introduce advanced technologies across key areas. Pakistan Railways plans to establish a 1,700km fiber optic backbone to support this system.
Of the total network, around 700km will consist of railway-owned fiber infrastructure, while another 1,000km will be developed in collaboration with the Frontier Works Organization under a strategic partnership arrangement.
The project also includes bandwidth transmission through public-private partnership mechanisms.
Pakistan Railways will also introduce its first complete digital manifest system. The move is expected to fully digitize freight operations, improving tracking, documentation, and efficiency.
The documents further show that GPS-based tracking systems will be introduced for locomotives and rolling stock to strengthen monitoring and operational management.
