Chinese state media has claimed that the J-10CE fighter jet scored a 9-0 win against the Eurofighter Typhoon in mock air combat exercises held last year.
According to the report, the exercises took place in 2024 and saw the Chinese-made J-10CE defeat the European fighter in all nine simulated engagements. The report said the J-10CE won five close-range dogfights and four beyond-visual-range encounters.
While the broadcaster did not disclose the full details of the drills or name the countries involved, reports in Pakistan linked the exercise to the joint air drill held in Qatar in January 2024, where Pakistan’s J-10CE aircraft were said to have flown against Qatar’s Eurofighter Typhoons.
The reported results have drawn attention because they offer a rare glimpse into the claimed performance of the export version of China’s J-10C in simulated combat against one of Europe’s best-known multirole fighters.
The J-10 was originally developed by Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and first emerged as a third-generation fighter platform. Its more advanced J-10C variant was introduced in 2017 as a 4.5-generation aircraft featuring an upgraded engine, AESA radar and modern air-to-air missiles such as the PL-10 and PL-15.
The export model, the J-10CE, was introduced to the international market in 2020. Pakistan remains the only country outside China known to operate the aircraft and has acquired 36 jets under the deal, with a significant number already inducted into the Pakistan Air Force.
On the other side, the Eurofighter Typhoon was jointly developed by the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain and has been in service with multiple air forces since 2007. Qatar operates a more advanced version of the aircraft.
Analysts quoted in foreign reports said the claimed exercise outcome could strengthen the J-10CE’s image in the export market and add more pressure on the Eurofighter’s position in the global arms trade.
