More than 500,000 students failed matriculation examinations across Pakistan during the 2025 academic session, according to a report released by the Inter Board Committee of Chairmen (IBCC), 24News reported on Friday.

Punjab recorded the highest number of failed students, with more than 358,000 candidates unable to clear the exams.

The report showed that 87,419 students failed matric exams under the Lahore Board alone. In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 80,558 students out of 444,000 candidates did not pass the examinations.

In Sindh, around 51,000 students out of 450,000 candidates failed, while the Quetta Board reported 9,797 failures among 78,839 students. The Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE) reported that 15,798 students out of 137,000 candidates failed the exams.

Education experts described the results as a sign of major weaknesses in teaching standards and student preparation, stressing the need for immediate reforms in the curriculum and teacher training system.
