Scientists have developed a new experimental cancer treatment that uses ultrasound waves and microscopic gas-filled bubbles to destroy breast cancer cells among Pakistani and other patients worldwide while limiting damage to healthy tissue and ending any requirement for surgery.
The technique was shared by the American Chemical Society and involves injecting tiny “microbubbles” into the bloodstream.
When exposed to targeted ultrasound energy, the bubbles rapidly expand and collapse, generating mechanical forces strong enough to disrupt tumor cells and surrounding blood vessels that feed the cancer.
The method could eventually offer a non-invasive alternative to traditional cancer treatments such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, which often affect healthy cells and cause significant side effects.
Laboratory and early animal studies have shown promising results, with ultrasound-activated microbubbles capable of damaging tumor structures and improving the delivery of cancer drugs directly into malignant tissue. Scientists believe this targeted approach may reduce toxicity, shorten recovery times and improve treatment precision.
The technology remains in experimental stages and requires further clinical trials before it can be used widely in hospitals.
The research comes as breast cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women worldwide. Around 2.3 million people are diagnosed with breast cancer each year globally, according to international health estimates, making it one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths.
Health agencies warn that global cases could rise sharply in the coming decades due to aging populations, lifestyle factors and improved detection rates.
Because millions of patients undergo surgery, chemotherapy or radiation annually, scientists worldwide are racing to develop safer and more targeted therapies.
If successful, ultrasound microbubble technology could become part of a new generation of precision cancer treatments.
