The Karachi Traffic Police has announced plans to introduce new regulations under which only rickshaws equipped with meters will be allowed to operate in the city.
Speaking at the Karachi Press Club, DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah said the department is also working to remove Qingqi rickshaws from major roads as part of efforts to improve traffic management and road safety.
He acknowledged that some motorists have been facing issues with the e challan system, adding that a new policy is being prepared to provide relief. According to the DIG, e challans are generated automatically, which can sometimes lead to errors.
Pir Muhammad Shah said the implementation of lane markings and the e challan system has helped improve traffic flow in Karachi. He also noted that 164 people lost their lives in accidents involving heavy vehicles in the city last year.
The DIG further revealed that official data shows around 45,000 vehicles are still registered in the names of previous owners. He said action has been taken against several individuals over the issue, with some being handed over to the police.
